The last place Dresden Jr. Kings inched closer to a playoff berth Friday night with a big win over the Mooretown Flags in a game they couldn’t afford to lose.

The Kings skated to 2-0 lead in the first twenty minutes on goals by Willy Bishop and Dan Hyatt, as Kyle Straatman continued his hot play in the nets for Dresden.

The Flags got back in the game with two power plays goals in the second period.  The first was a five on three by Ray Martin, then Elliott Lewis scored to tie the game at 14:59.  Dan Hyatt gave the Kings back the lead, with his second goal of the game, at 19:33.  Jake Welch and Joe Deboer drew the assists.

Mooretown struck quickly in the third to make it 3-3 on a goal by Spencer Lightfoot, who was left all alone in Straatman’s crease.  JP Shaw blasted a shot past Flags’ netminder, Jeff Steadman, from the right point at 4:54 to give a Kings another one-goal lead.  Ray Martin scored with the man-advantage to even things up again.  Then JP Shaw went to work once more.  This time he scored the winning goal from the left point at 13:31, while the Jr. Kings were on the power play.  Kyle Vink rounded out the scoring with an empty netter at 19:05, giving the Jr. Kings a 6-4 victory.

The Jr. Kings now trail both Mooretown and Blenheim by five points in the battle for a playoff spot, and only seven behind Alvinston.  Each team had 38 shots on net.  Mooretown converted 3 of 10 power play opportunities, while Dresden were 1 for 6.  The Tunstall Three Stars were ……….. Joe Deboer, JP Shaw and Dan Hyatt.

The Jr. Kings travel to Wheatley on Monday night, and then host the Blenheim Blades next Friday, December 21st.
