With a new coaching staff, and only seven returning players, the Dresden Jr. Kings opened the new season with a disappointing 4-2 loss at home to the Alvinston Flyers on Friday night.  Head coach Bob Price, with assistants Ken Gagner and Ken Shine, showed the Dresden fans a fast, young team that is only going to get better as they jell and gain confidence.

The Flyers struck first at 7:34 of the first period when Scott Case was left standing alone to the left of Dresden’s goaltender Tyler Hendricks and shoved in a loose puck from the crease area.

Rookie Joe Deboer evened things up for the Jr. Kings at 9:35 of the second period when he ripped a high wrist shot over the shoulder of Brendan Zwambag, who played a strong game in the nets for the Flyers.  Alex McDonald and Jim Rouse drew assists on the play power goal.  Alvinston regained the lead in the last minute of the period on a lucky sort of goal.  With  Greg Dilliott in the penalty box for roughing, the Flyers took a shot from the point that bounced around in front of Hendricks, and then finally slid behind him in slow motion.  Mitch Coultes was credited with the goal.

The Flyers came out flying in the third.  Scott Case upped their lead to 3-1 on a play very similar to the goal he scored in the first period from beside the net.   They continued to carry the play for the next ten minutes, until Jake Welch pulled the Jr. Kings within one with three minutes remaining in the game.  Joe Deboer and Jed Goodacre assisted on the play.  Dresden pressed for the tying goal, but an empty netter by Chris Wilson sealed the win for the visiting Flyers.

Overall the Jr. Kings looked good.  They were quick and moved the puck around a lot.  The Tunstall Three Stars were ……… Joe Deboer, Jake Welch, and Dan Hyatt.  The Jr. Kings travel to Wallaceburg on Wednesday night, Sept. 19th, to face-off against the Lakers at 7:30.  They play at home two nights later, Friday, Sept. 21st, against the Mooretown Flags.
