Alvinston  2           Dresden  1             December 28, 2007

The Alvinston Flyers put a halt to the Dresden Jr. Kings’ four game unbeaten streak on Friday night with a hard-fought 2-1 win.  The victory moves the Flyers six points ahead of the Kings for second place in the North Division.

The Jr. Kings continued to play disciplined, defensive hockey in the first period, often frustrating the Flyers, resulting in a scoreless tie after one.

The second period was all Alvinston as the Kings’ defense broke down.  Goaltender, Kyle Straatman, was outstanding in net for Dresden once again.  He didn’t falter until late in the second period.  A turnover at the Jr. Kings’ blueline resulted in a goal by Mitch Knight at 17:27 to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead.  Then, with five seconds left in the period, the Flyers scored a disputed goal while enjoying a five on three advantage.

The Jr. Kings had chances in the third, but couldn’t beat Flyers’ goalie, Brendan Zwambag, until the last minute of play with a sixth attacker on a goal by Dan Hyatt, from Aaron Gibbings and Kevin Verburg.  The Flyers outshot the Jr. Kings, 33-26.  The Tunstall Three Stars were ……. Jake Welch, Kyle Straatman, and Dan Hyatt.

Dresden now plays an important home-and-home series against the Mooretown Flags, who they are in a dogfight with for the final playoff spot.  The Flags and the Blenheim Blades currently sit in the last two playoff positions with 20 points, while the Kings have 18.  The first game is in Mooretown on Saturday night (Dec. 29), and then back home next Friday (Jan. 4).
